All Dressed Up For Spring Adventures: Spring style for kids with OshKosh B’gosh
Spring is here! Of course, it doesn’t exactly feel that way in some parts of the country quite yet. It’s snowing in Maine, and down here in Texas there are already days where it feels like summer has begun. But no matter where you are, one thing is for sure – the days of bulky sweaters and winter coats are coming to an end soon. Spring style for kids is all about being comfortable and having fun. These are two things that we try to embrace on the daily, so this time of year really puts us in a good mood.
This is a great time of year to be little. Spring embraces comfortable fabrics like cotton and jersey – perfect for playing outside! Versatile pieces, like jeans and t-shirts are great investments for the rest of the year since they can easily be transitioned into summer and fall outfits, making Mama happy too. Today, I’m sharing my best tips for dressing kiddos for spring fun.
P.S. The handsome brunette fellow you are about to see hanging out with Charlie in these photos is his cousin, Fox. Fox is an excellent model and I am a very lucky auntie for having such an adorable ham in my life. Thanks for helping out with our photo shoot, Fox!! High five to kids who actually enjoy having their picture taken!! They are like magical unicorns.
Pick Versatile Pieces
Personally, my favorite spring style for kids is an OshKosh B’gosh classic. My kiddo can really rock a pair of overalls, and we are both loving the huge variety of overall shorts making appearances in OshKosh stores this spring. I feel like overalls are perfect for rough and tumble outdoor play, but are also cute enough for Easter photos and birthday parties.
Highlight Comfort
When spring is in the air, children want to get outside and play. That means they’ll need cool, breathable fabrics with plenty of coverage and durability. T-shirts are a must. Jersey cotton fabric is nice and stretchy and breathes well enough to keep kids comfortable through chill dewy mornings to sweltering humid afternoons. A thin hoodie or light sweater can be tucked into your young one’s backpack in case the wind picks up or the temperature drops.
Durability Rules
This is where jeans and overalls come in. When I was a kid my pants always took a beating. Between sliding down rocks, wiping out on gravel paths, and climbing trees all day, I would make short work of flimsy fabrics. My son is just the same, so when we are heading out for a hike or go exploring on a nature trail I make sure he is dressed in a sturdy pair of denim jeans or overalls. He loves comfy sweatpants and track suits too – but we tend to save those soft and cuddly clothes for downtime at home or for indoor adventures like the library or children’s museum.
Double-Duty Dress Up Clothes
While I do get a kick out of dressing up my son for special occasions I am far too frugal at heart to buy him a whole elaborate outfit for just one special day. That’s why when it comes to spring holidays like Easter or Passover, I reach for classic pieces that can be dressed up or down for play and school as well. Plaid button down shirts fit right in at a holiday meal or a trip to the rodeo.
Details, like overalls or bowties can be used to make a jeans and button down outfit instantly fancy. When it’s time to play, just take those little additions off and you are good to go! Of course, if you ask me, it is perfectly acceptable to rock a bowtie and suspenders at the playground too. Childhood is absolutely the right time to experiment with your wardrobe after all.
Let Them Play
While cleverly coordinated outfits are indeed a thing of beauty, it’s also a lot of fun to let your kids pick out their own clothes. Most days my son leaves the house looking more like a ragamuffin than a kids style guru, but I feel good about him getting the chance to express himself. That often means breaking all the rules fashion-wise. But all of those socks with sandals, clashing colors, and multiple pattern mash-ups make him who he is – and that’s someone I love to little bits and pieces.
