I usually prefer going to places with vegan options as opposed to straight vegan places (though some are great!) The best veg place is Bouldin Creek. It's vegetarian comfort food which may or may not appeal to you at this point. Mother's is not for the faint of heart. I love it because avocado sandwiches and hemp are ok by me, but I would never recommend it to anyone.
Cap City Bakery comprised this list (<a href="http://www.capitalcitybakery.com/guide/)" rel="nofollow">http://www.capitalcitybakery.com/guide/)</a> of vegan friendly places around Austin. It thoroughly covers the basics. Without blowing up your comments, here's my quick summery. Some are pure vegetarian places, but most are not.:
Burgers - Arlo's (Yeahhhh buddy!)
Tacos - Tico Tacos at Pueblo Viejo or any vegan tacos at Tamale House East. The fried avocado taco at Mellizos can be made vegan and is great. Julio's is good too. Really most taco places are good, but I love these ones.
Pizza - VIA 313. The Parlor is a good second, but VIA's crust is magical.
Italian - Asti treats ya right.
Chinese - Asia Cafe. It's filled with Chinese people, the food runners barely speak english, but they know what vegan means and have a plethora of options. It's an amazing place.
Thai - I love Thai Passion.
Indian - Graj Mahal is great with vegan food. As is Clay Pit, but I'm partial to Graj.
Austin has so many great resources for vegan food. The only thing we lack is nice fine cuisine. Trailers and such are great, but sometimes I miss tablecloths without having to call ahead to check options. Thats not a huge deal though. Just me complaining!
(Quick notes! 1. Vegan cheese sucks, but the standard Follow Your Heart is the best IMO. People love Daiya because it stretches like cheese, but I think it tastes like popcorn butter. FYH has a very mild flavor and gets the job done, but it doesn't stretch. I don't think either are soy free though so it may not matter. 2. If you need marshmallows in your life Dandies are the best. I personally need marshmallows so the invention of these were a God send.)

Thanks for the tips! Man, we are lucky to be in such a vegan-friendly town. I'll definitely check out Mimic Creme and the Vegan Queso. So far, I've been enjoying Almond Dream Ice Cream. It doesn't really taste like ice cream, more like a fudgesicle, but that's a pretty good compromise if you ask me!! So do you have any favorite restaurants in Austin for vegan food?

Welcome to the realm of veganism! I went vegan 8 years ago and it just keeps getting better. Homemade ice cream is best made with Mimic Creme (<a href="http://www.mimiccreme.com/)" rel="nofollow">http://www.mimiccreme.com/)</a> in my opinion. It's the creamiest and easiest thing to use and it tastes so. good. I'm not allergic to soy, but I really hate the flavor of it. As for store bought, the pickins are rough but Rice Divine (<a href="http://www.goodkarmafoods.com/)" rel="nofollow">http://www.goodkarmafoods.com/)</a> is the best I've come across (for soy free.)
I'm in Austin as well so here's a tip for a food you may end up missing: Try Food for Lover's vegan queso. It's spicy and delicious and soy free. There's nothing weird or vegany about it. It's straight up awesome. You can get it at Whole Foods, Wheatsville and Rabbit Food Grocery.
Also, I veganized your Saute'd Brussel Sprout Greens with Bacon & White Beans by using Uptons chorizo instead of bacon. Loved it!
