Last week, my friend Maggie and I spent three intense days learning about the role that food is playing in the health of our global eco-system. The SXSW Eco Conference brought together experts on topics like agriculture, climate change, oceanography, and clean energy. Session after session continued to drive home a single point to me. The many, many issues that we, as a global community have are connected. The idea that climate change and sustainable agriculture, for example, are two different things is a dangerous misconception. Just like a human body, our eco-system relies on a variety of sub-systems to work in harmony in order to thrive. We need to realize that everything we do, or don't do, affects the whole.
While I can't be everywhere at once, fighting for every issue I am passionate about, I can focus on what I know. That's food. Sustainable food is major factor in promoting not only a healthy eco-system, but healthy human beings. It's the cause I've chosen to fight for, and put my energy into.
For those of us who have decided to "eat out loud", we have a wonderful opportunity to work as educators on the topics of health food, sustainable agriculture, and organic farming. Bloggers like us can help affect change in a major way, by taking these heavy issues and making them digestible for our readers. We can present problems and solutions in a friendly way, making it easier for people to learn about everything from food choices to grassroots activism.
Maggie and I decided that right now would be a great time to take advantage of that opportunity. Food Day is coming up on October 24th, a nationwide celebration and movement toward more healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. We would love to invite all of our fellow food bloggers to write a post about the fight for good, clean, fair food. On Food Day, Maggie and I will share links to every one of your posts on our blogs, on our social networks, and with the folks at FoodDay.org.
Let's blog together to make a difference for what we love most, food!
