30 Days With a Grateful Heart: My Inner Ninja Turtle

Pizza at 360 Pizza - The Popeye was awesome! Crunchy thin crust. #pizzabustouratx #googlepizzaatx

Day 06/30: Pizza

God I want some pizza.

I would try to blame the ferocity of my pizza cravings on pregnancy, but I’m pretty sure that would be a lie. I’ve always loved pizza. If I don’t eat pizza at least twice a month I’m pretty sure my quality of life declines.

Of course, pizza here in Texas is not quite pizza back home, but what can you do? While I am yet to find a truly perfect New York slice in Austin, I have discovered a few places that are really, really good (just different).

Pesto Pizza at Pieous. Ohhhh yeah.

My current overall favorite would have to be Pieous. It’s sort of out of the way, which is actually a good thing. If it were closer I would eat it way too often, which would leave me very happy, but also fat and broke. The pizza at Pieous is lovingly handmade, from the perfectly puffy dough to the tastier than usual mozzarella. They even make their own pastrami (if you are into that). Baked neopolatin style in a super hot oven, Pieous pizzas are slightly scorched and bursting with fat, crunchy bubbles of cheese and crust. I could eat it every day.

I got to visit Italy this year, which is like the pizza lover’s holy land. I can’t even tell you what that was like. It would be like trying to explain what it’s like to eat hot bubbly happiness in a crust. Pro tip: hot bubbly happiness is best consumed with a knife and fork. No slices!

Bobleo eating pizza!

Other places I dig in Austin are House Pizzeria, Via 313, East Side Pies, and Salvation Pizza. These are all pretty good, but for the most part, we’ve been sticking to Pieouse for date nights, and our local favorite, Yaghi’s, for take-out.

What I like about Yaghi’s is that it’s decent pizza at a reasonable price, something we’ve really missed from home. Sure, we could go out and blow a small fortune at Home Slice or another fancy-pants pizza place, but what about the nights you just want to curl up on the couch with a slice and some trashy scifi? On those nights, Yaghi’s is good enough for me.

We haven’t been yet, but we’ve heard really great things about Saccone’s, a pizza shop up in North Austin. Do you have a favorite pizza place in Austin? Do tell.

Now that's a slice - at Pink's Pizza in Houston. #pizza @shortstackphoto
