Feminist Art Canvases: An easy art project to help inspire your lady-power.
Babes, 2018 should be our year. Many of us (myself included) spent a good part of the last year in shock. There was crying. There was fear. There was rage – plenty of rage. But we’ve had some time to reflect, to regroup, and to rally. Our time is here, and knowing that makes me feel a lot better about bringing a brand new little girl into the world this June.
Lately I’ve been seeing a ton of amazing feminist art popping up on Instagram and Etsy. Gorgeous artwork peppered with inspirational language, quotes, and lady mantras have totally captivated my attention. I knew once I saw them that I needed to start making my own too.
These simple art pieces are easy to make and open to your own creative impulses. You can feel free to get messy and make your artwork as simple or fancy as you please. If you want, you can even just paint a solid color! I tend to favor abstract backgrounds, but when I did this project with some friends I was in love with their totally different takes on the project.
Start by choosing your favorite quotes to feature on your artwork. You can find your own quotes or you can use the ones I’ve collected in this printable file.
Need some more inspiration? The following are some of my favorite Instagram feeds packed with amazing femme-centric quotes, stories, and imagery: @thegirlfriendmanifesto, @girlsareawesome, @tribedemama, @thegoddessrebellion, @iwasjustsayingthat, @laurenstrom
You’ll Need:
- Heavy weight art paper or mini canvases
- Inspirational quotes or mantras
- Paint and brushes
- Paint Markers
Step One: Cut or tear your paper into whatever size and shape you’d like. I made a variety of shapes and sizes for my project.
Step Two: Moisten the paper with clean water. This will help your watercolor paint bleed into the paper and blend color.
Step Three: Paint the paper with a variety of colors and patterns, or just paint them in solid colors.
Step Four: Once the paintings are dry, cut out your quotes and glue them onto the paintings.
Step Five: Display your artwork in a place where it can inspire you!
