So y’all probably know that it is creeping up well past 100 degrees here in Austin. I mean, that’s not big news or anything. In fact, we enjoyed a nice long Spring this year so complianing about the heat at this stage in the game would just be plain old yellow-bellied.
Lucky for me, I’m part lizard. I love the heat. I love the way the sun beats down from the blue sky day in and day out. Roasting in the sun, or lounging in the shade, I’m content to while away the lazy Texas summer as slowly as possible. When I start to burn out on Summer all it takes is a visit to Barton Springs. Sixty eight degrees of pure bliss washes away my sorrow every time.
Ahhhh… Summer. My season!
- Popsicles are on the menu, naturally. Jerry James Stone has posted an amazing collection of them on his blog. Be sure and check them out. They are not only ridiculously pretty, but they sound tasty as well.
- Speaking of tasty, have you had a Pimm’s cup? Hilah turned me on to them social media style. (Meaning I noticed her drinking it a lot while I stalked her online.) They are plenty good, but might be even better in popsicle form. I found a recipe for Pimmsicles on The Tiffin Box. Pretty cool.
- I’m currently waiting on a delivery from Mod Cloth, whose Summer dresses I am continually obsessed with. They have a blog too, you know, and they just happened to share a tasty Pina Colada Popsicle recipe there.
- If you enjoyed my Ginger-Lime Simple Syrup recipe from last week then you will almost certainly be interested to check out this Orange Honey Ginger Syrup recipe from The Cooking College Sudents.
Austin Veggie Pro Tip: Sprouts makes some pretty awesome vegetarian sandwiches in their deli. They start cheap, like $3.99 cheap, and go up in fifty cent increments as you add on extras like guacamole or special cheese. Hello, lunch.
Look at that garden. It appears to be an oasis of serenity. In truth it has become a serious battleground. It’s me against nature, all forms of nature too, possums, fire ants, pill bugs, catterpillars, weather. Just about everything has tried to annihilate my little slice of Heaven, but I just keep on fighting back. The rewards thus far have been few, a tomato here, a cob of corn there, but I don’t intend to give up anytime soon. If you’re the praying type, do me a favor and put in a good word with the Big Guy for me. My garden could use some divine aid.
While you’re at it, throw in some happy thoughts for my sister, Scissorina, who is on the brink of birthing a sweet baby boy anytime now. My sisters, my Mom, and I threw her a fancy schmancy baby shower last month to celebrate. We went a little bit crazy with the food and decorations. You can check all of that out at Mary Makes Pretty. I’ll just give you a little taste of the madness here. Behold, ice babies!
