Day 10/30: Sci-Fi
Weeping angels, klingons, luxans, and reevers. What do all of these things have in common? Well, for starters, they are imaginary. They are also present in some of my favorite science fiction series of all time. When I decide to rot my brain with television, my preferred genre is sci-fi. I can't get enough of hoaky special effects, corny jokes, and classic hero vs. villain storylines. Thank goodness geeks keep writing this stuff. Where would I be without it?
Without further ado, I give you my favorte Sci-fi TV shows ever:
Star Trek
Though Next Generation is far and away the closest to my heart, I'm also a huge fan of Enterprise and Deep Space Nine. I've even watched Voyager. I know, right? You'll notice that noone tried putting a ration on Janeway's hair spray supply. As for the movies, the classics reign supreme, Wrath of Kahn and Search for Spock being two of the best movies EVER. I like the new films too, and I have a soft spot for the Next Gen movies, of course, but nothing compares to Shatner and Nimoy at their best.
Farscape
This was such a brilliant series. Being a serious Jim Henson fan, I couldn't help but be drawn in by the characters from his Creature Workshop. The the story took off and oh, was I hooked. Farscape was a magical series for me. It had such a wonderful balance of drama, cheese, and fantasy. I love that the writers got to wrap everything up too.
Firefly
If ever there was a series cut painfully short, it was this one. How can something so good have so few episodes. The combination of outer-space meets old west was just the coolest idea anyone ever had. Unbelievably, the cast, costumes, and artwork all came together to support that brilliant idea and deliver a universe so real and compelling that I find myself re-watching the entire short series every year. Another movie would make my life.
Battlestar Galactica (the new one)
Scott Bobleo and I devoured this series. Granted, I am little gullible, but the plot had me reeling from beginning to end, shocking me at every turn. It was like a book I couldn't put down. I'm actually grateful that we started watching it so close to the end of the series. I don't think the story would have been quite the same if I hadn't binge-watched the first few seasons. Fracking skinjobs.
Doctor Who
I'm a relatively new Doctor Who convert. Compared to the length of time and dedication I've invested in the other series listed here, the Doctor is still a fresh flame. My personal favorite Doctor in the last three was David Tennant. I was heartbroken when he transformed into Matt Smith. So much so, that I'm actually pretty happy to see old caveman face hit the road. I know it's not his fault, but I just can't forgive him for not being MY doctor. I still haven't watched the anniversary special this year. I'll have to wait and see how I feel about the newbie. I'm hoping he'll be more lovable this time around.
