Day 29/30: Fabric, Thread, and the Hum of a Sewing Machine
I love to sew, but I'm not much for patterns. For this reason, clothing tends to be a challenge for me, and as much as I'd love to be sewing piles of cute tiny outfits for Babe-leo, I sort of gave up after the first pair of asymetric sweatpants.
Oh well. Who needs sweatpants anyway? It's not like this baby is going to be working out anytime soon. For the time being, I'm keeping my prenatal crafting to a more familiar realm, quilts. I'm a pretty reckless quilter. I chop haphazardly at my stash of fabric, then piece it together with little to no plan of attack. Sooner or later it starts to resemble a rectangle or square. At that point I tweak and fiddle until the patchwork grows to a nice cozy size. Boom, patchwork. Nothin' to it.
Naturally, my baby's crib quilt and bumpers were made in this fashion. I'm going for a nautical slash world travel theme. (I know. I'm a big weirdo.) Most of the nautical stuff out there is really patriotic, swimming in cobalt and fire engine red. I had more of a pirate ship colorway in mind, so I went with brown, gold, emerald, teal, and burgundy. There are even some swatches of Heather Ross's squid and mermaid fabrics. I suppose it doesn't scream BABY, but it does scream MARY, so there's something.
I did the backing in a pretty green fish print. I like the way that it doesn't really match the front. I feel like pirates wouldn't care all that much about matching either.
This project reminds me a lot of the blanket I made my little sister for her college graduation gift. I used similar colors and fabrics for the patchwork, but created a gigantic applique in the center, featuring a giant squid wrestling a sperm whale.
Nice, right? I used a splotchy batik on the back of this quilt. It reminded me of murky waters. Spooooooooooky.
